DEBIT CARD SKIMMING
KEEPING YOUR INFORMATION SECURE
Debit card skimming is the electronic capture of data from the magnetic stripe on debit and credit cards. This information is copied onto another card, which is used to purchase goods, make withdrawals or process other kinds of fraudulent transactions without the knowledge or consent of the cardholder.

The financial services industry takes this kind of crime very seriously and while it does appear to be on the rise, so are the credit union's efforts to combat it. AWCCU is committed to protecting our--owners from-debit card fraud. Over the summer, AWCCU has installed new card readers on all of our ATMs. This device, which glows green (see picture below), prevents the capture of information from debit cards using illegal devices. The new card reader will not affect the way you use the ATM but will heighten security and privacy protection.

Please remember: if an ATM card reader or the reader at the lobby door looks suspicious, please do not use it and contact the branch immediately.

Protecting Yourself from Financial Fraud

• Never disclose your PIN to anyone. Memorize your PIN and if you suspect someone knows what it is, change it immediately
• Use your free hand or body to shield your hand when inputting your PIN
• Check your transactions records against your statement regularly
• Do not use an ATM if anything about it appears suspicious
• Be alert: if someone is watching and you're uncomfortable, cancel your transaction
• Never let your debit card out of your sight when using it to pay for something
• Always-take-your debit-card--and tran-sactian -record with you
• If your debit card is lost, stolen or retained by an ATM, notify your branch or the Contact Centre immediately. After business hours, please call 1-800-LOST-111 or 1-800-567-8111 to report lost or stolen cards.
